July 4th - Williamsburg, Virginia
I would like to start this section by prefacing, if you haven’t yet experienced July 4th at Mount Vernon, there are myriad activities, history, fun for children, and a stunning fireworks display.
Have you ever taken a day trip to Williamsburg? Williamsburg brings all the history alive with the Governor's Palace, the shops and gardens, work sites, revolutionary conversations and gun salutes and so much more. July 4th takes all the richness and history, and brings it to the next level of stepping to another place in time. Of the many activities offered on this holiday, the Noon Reading of the Declaration of Independence is one to hear. There will be a Salute to the States, canon salutes to the original thirteen states; experience the daily activities of an 18th century family life at the James Geddy House; and witness historical conversations among key figures. In the evening, the Fife and Drums play patriotic tunes as the sun dips down, and families pull out their lawn chairs, and children watch the fireflies and bats. The fireworks are a wondrous experience on the lawn at Williamsburg. After the show, uniformed soldiers carrying torches escort the visitors out of town and back to their vehicles. What a performance! This is a family activity to experience at least one time. In the summer heat, hats, sunscreen, lemonade, water and sustenance is a necessity.
