McLean, Va - 10 Free Things To Do This Summer!

As the temperatures start to climb and we get closer to July 4th, our summertime can feel very busy, moving quickly.  Most families like to have downtime days where quieter activities are on the menu.  Storytime, crafts and visiting farms can be fun and don't forget hats, sunscreen and hydration!

Here are 10 fun activities to do in and around Mclean that are free!  

July 4th Independence Day Concert at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum - Celebrate the 4th of July with a special performance by the United States Air Force Band's Ceremonial Brass Quintet. Performances begin at 11:00 am, noon, and 1:00 pm. Each concert will last 20 minutes.

Summer Sunday Concerts - McLean Community Center 

Sunday, June 30, 5PM - Sonia de Los Santos - Praised on Billboard’s “Best Latin Kids Music” list, Sonia de Los Santo’s bilingual children’s album “¡AlegrÍa!” celebrates everyday themes that bring us joy and weaves together styles from across the Americas.

Sunday, July 7, 5PM - DuPont Brass - This “new” brass band plays an eclectic mix of original compositions and arrangements of songs by Miles Davis, JAY-Z and others.

Sunday, July 14th, 5PM - Frontiers - A Journey Tribute Band - Don’t stop believing! This stellar Journey tribute band returns by popular demand.

Clemyjontri Park, 6317 Georgetown Pike, McLean - Where every child can play! CLEMYJONTRI PARK features a unique playground where children of all abilities can play side-by-side. This park is a place where children who use wheelchairs, walkers or braces, or who have sensory or developmental disabilities, can have a parallel playground experience of fun and exploration.  Clemyjontri offers a Carousel and a Train!  Hours of operation and schedule found on their website.  *Nominal fee for the train and carousel.

Great Falls National Park - Pack a picnic and see the Falls!  This stunning 800-acre National Park is just off the Potomac River with easy access from McLean.  Hours are Sun-Sat 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM.  Address is 9200 Old Dominion Dr, McLean.  More information at

Tent Tales for Tykes - L.L. Bean at Tyson's Corner Center - Every Tuesday morning 10:30 AM - Come join L.L.Bean at Tyson’s Corner Center each Tuesday morning for story time and more!  Each week we’ll read a story with an outdoor or seasonal theme, followed by a fun craft or activity.  Free.

Frying Pan Farm Park - Kidwell Farm, Herndon, Va - Open Dawn till Dusk.  2709 West Ox Road, Herndon - Frying Pan preserves and interprets farm life of the 1920s to 1950s. A very popular park in Fairfax County!  Meet draft horses, chickens, peacocks, rabbits, sheep, goats, cows and pigs at Frying Pan Farm Park's working farm of the 1930s. Take a wagon ride and watch the farm hands at work. Take a tour to see how farm families lived in the 1930s, or just sit on the porch of the Kidwell Farmhouse.  In addition, there is a small fee program called "Little Hands on the Farm", more information found at

Smithsonian Museums and National Zoo - Washington, DC - Of course, no summer list is complete without a mention of the wonderful Smithsonian Museums and the National Zoo!  Have you been meaning to get to one of the museums or has it been 5 years since you last visited the National Zoo?  Always something to see and some wonderful thing on display!  The museums have all of their own events, activities, features, films and more.  Explore the musems here -

Her Spanish minor took her degree studies to Seville and Madrid, with a heritage nod to her ancestors from Valencia.
